Al Bilali Sudan: Concert Tiny Desk (house)

For the second year in a row, NPR has partnered with globalFEST in January 2021 for an exciting online music festival we call Small office meets globalFEST: three nights, nine bands and a world of musical traditions hosted by African pop star Angélique Kidjo. Now we are releasing all of our festival sets as individual Tiny Desk (home) gigs.

Members of Al Bilali Soudan’s family, originally from Timbuktu, Mali, are sought-after musicians and griots. Led by Abellow Yattara, the group is a torchbearer of Tamasheq (or Tuareg) music par excellence, shaped by a continuous exchange between the tehardent (lute), singing and manual percussion. The sung words are similarly percussive, like an instrument themselves. This kind of music has been performed for half a millennium by Tuareg griots to celebrate the end of harvests and the change of seasons, heroic warriors and noble families. –globalFEST staff
