Kris Boyd sounds Rangers warning for Celtic clash as worried pundit still has Parkhead on his mind

Kris Boyd has warned Rangers they simply cannot afford to start next week’s derby in the same lifeless fashion as last time out.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side were blown away by Celtic on a brutal night for the Premiership champions in February.

A brace from Reo Hatate and a third from Liel Abada swung the momentum of the title chase towards east Glasgow and it is Parkhead’s side who enter the April 3 clash as leaders of the league.

That result was built on a lightning-fast first half from Ange Postecoglou players and Boyd, who was back at Ibrox on Saturday for a legends game, insists Rangers must make sure it doesn’t. happen again.

He told Sky Sports: “You’re going to have to start the game much better, sharper, brighter than you did. [at Celtic Park].”

“The game ended at half-time, indeed, after Celtic left.

“Coming into the game, Celtic, there would have been nerves there because you haven’t beaten Rangers in a long time, but when you get that goal so early you push and the fans are right behind you.

“To lead 3-0 at half time, I don’t think even Celtic fans would have expected that, but that’s exactly how the game went.

“Rangers came out in the second half and tried to get back into it.

“There is encouragement to take from the second half and I’m sure that will be the message that Giovanni van Bronckhorst will try to convey to his players. It’s also difficult with international fixtures this week.

“The damage was done in the first half for Rangers and it shows you that if you don’t start a game properly you will be punished.”

Rangers were without talisman Alfredo Morelos and he will be assessed by the Rangers medical team after returning to Scotland early from Colombian duty on Saturday.

The striker suffered from a muscle problem and was cleared to return to Glasgow after missing out on Thursday’s win over Bolivia.

A statement from the Colombian Football Federation said: “The technical and medical staff of the senior men’s national team of Colombia reports that after carrying out medical tests on the player Alfredo Morelos, a muscle injury in his left thigh has been confirmed. confirmed which ruled him out of the previous game against Bolivia and also does not allow him to play in the next game of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 qualifiers.
