HPR Garett Payne (NCSU) vs. RHP Jaheim Brown (A&T)

NC State traveled to No. 8 Florida State last weekend for a three-game series. After the weather postponed the series opener on Friday, the teams played the opener on Saturday and the Pack were unable to overcome an early deficit and fell 13-5.

The teams played a doubleheader on Sunday, and after the Pack forced a rubber game with a 15-4 win in the first game of the day, the nightcap went to 17 innings and the Seminoles won in mode walk-off. It was the longest game for the Pack since June 9, 2013, when they defeated Rice, 5-4 (17), in the NCAA Super Regional to qualify for the College World Series.

An NCAA record 54 combined strikeouts were recorded in the contest, and NC State’s 28 were the most since March 19, 2016 against Notre Dame.

Tuesday will be the 24th all-time meeting between NC State and NC A&T, with the Pack having won the previous 23 meetings.

The teams last met on April 14, 2021 in Raleigh, and the Pack took a 10-4 victory.

After battling multiple injuries since joining the program in 2019, the 2022 season has been a full-circle campaign for Logan Whitaker. He currently leads the pitching team with a 1.10 ERA and a 1-1 record in 16.1 innings.

In his two starts last week at Elon and Florida State, he allowed just one hit in 8.0 shutout innings and struck out nine batters.

left-handed Chris Villaman was extinguished in Sunday’s Pack rubber game at No. 8 Florida State as he whipped up 12 batters in 5.0 innings in relief. His 12 strikeouts tied his career high for a single game, but he only reached the mark in three innings less than the last time he accomplished the feat.

The last time he had 12 strikeouts was against UNCW on May 11, 2021 in Raleigh in eight innings of work.

First-year student Payton Green hit his first career home run on March 19 at No. 8 Florida State, a solo shot in the fourth inning to right field. He homered again on his next at bat, a three-run shot to left field in the sixth inning.

His four RBI on the day was a career high in a single game.

Tommy White lived up to his name in Game 1 of the Pack’s doubleheader at Florida State on Sunday, as he homered twice to lead in four combined runs.

It was the third time this season he had hit multiple home runs and the sixth time this year he had four or more runs in a game. He ranks second in the NCAA with 11 long runs and 36 RBI on the year.
